Zimbabwe’s Maize Imports Set To Drop In 2025/26

Zimbabwe is expected to import around 1 million tonnes of maize in the 2025/26 season, according to forecasts by the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (FAS USDA). This marks a 25% decrease from the previous season, which ended on 30 April, largely due to higher local production driven by favourable weather conditions. Despite this improvement, Zimbabwe remains a net importer of maize, with annual consumption exceeding production by 850,000 tonnes. The country has relied on maize imports since the early 2000s, following land reforms that affected agricultural output. Imports are expected to resume in the second half of the season, once local supplies tighten. Most maize imports will likely come from South Africa, which has 1.5 million tonnes available for export. Although Zimbabwe imposes zero import duty on maize, the Ministry of Lands, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development has proposed a temporary ban on cereal imports to support local producers, a move widely welcomed by Zimbabwean farmers. In the 2024/25 season, Zimbabwe imported 1.3 million tonnes of maize, nearly doubling the 700,000 tonnes imported in 2023/24. The increase was largely due to dry conditions that heightened the demand for imported maize. Most of the recent imports came from South Africa, including 835,000 tonnes of white maize and 440,000 tonnes of yellow maize, closely mirroring import patterns from 2023/24. More: UkrAgroConsult
