Zimbabwe Inks 30-megawatt Solar Deal With InfraCo Africa
Zimbabwe has signed a Government Project Support Agreement (GPSA) with InfraCo Africa to pave the way for the development of a 30-megawatt solar power plant in Vungu, Midlands Province.
The agreement was finalised on Wednesday, 18 June, during the Africa Energy Forum currently underway in Cape Town, South Africa.
The signing was officiated by Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo, who hailed the project as a significant step towards strengthening the country’s renewable energy ambitions.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Minister Moyo said the Government of Zimbabwe has implemented reforms to de-risk solar investment including tax incentives, customs duty exemptions and guaranteed power purchase agreements. He added:
Land is available in multiple areas. Investors only need to carry out feasibility studies, obtain grid impact assessments from the utility and secure licencing from our regulator.
InfraCo Africa’s Head of Business Development, Omar Jabri, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering the newly signed 30-megawatt solar power project in Vungu.
Jabri said the deal would not have been possible without the collaboration of legal advisors Africa Green Coal ELSF and support from the UK government.
Ahead of the signing ceremony, Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo participated in a closed-door meeting focused on accelerating large-scale solar initiatives.
The meeting, hosted by South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy and sponsored by Sun Africa Renewable Energy Solutions, brought together key regional stakeholders.
At the event, Minister Moyo said that net metering and small-scale solar plants are already contributing around 60 megawatts to the national grid, with a target to reach 100 megawatts.
