Finland sees €460m trade deficit in Sep

The trade balance showed a deficit of EUR 460 million in September, according to the statistics of international trade in goods published by Finnish Customs on Thursday. In January-September 2025, the trade balance had accumulated a deficit of EUR 297 million. The aggregate trade surplus by commodity group increased for industrial machinery and equipment and forest industry products. The deficit increased for ores and metal scrap, chemicals and related products, foods and beverages and electrical machinery and equipment, but decreased for crude oil and refined petroleum products. The value of Finnish exports of goods was EUR 6.3 billion, which was 3.1% lower year-on-year in September. Export volume decreased by 1.1% and export prices declined by 1.9% year-on-year. The value of imports increased by 7.1% to EUR 6.8 billion. Import prices declined by 0.4% and import volume increased by 9.0% compared to September 2024. In January-September, the total value of exports increased by 3.2%. The value of imports remained at the same level as during the corresponding period of the previous year. Change of export volume during the latest 12 months was +0.9% (12-month moving average October 2024 – September 2025). The corresponding figure for import volume was +1.9%. The terms of trade deteriorated in September compared to the corresponding month of 2024 as export prices declined more than import prices. The point figure in September was 97.9, while it was 99.4 in September 2024. The terms of trade deteriorated from August 2025. The value of exports of industrial supplies decreased by 4.8% in September. The value of exports of capital goods increased by 3.3% year-on-year. The value of exports of fuels and lubricants increased by 11.4%. The value of exports of consumer goods increased by 3.3% and the value of exports of food and beverages by 3.2%. The value of exports of transport equipment and parts declined by 38.8%. The value of imports of industrial supplies decreased by 6.8% in September, but the value of imports of capital goods increased by 31.9% year-on-year. The value of imports of transportation equipment and their parts declined by 2.7%. The value of imports of fuels and lubricants increased by 6.3%. The value of imports of food and beverages increased by 11.4% and the value of imports of consumer goods by 3.9%. The value of exports to EU member states increased by 6.1%, but exports to other countries declined by 14.3% in September. Imports from EU countries increased by 4.6% and imports from non-EU countries by 10.6%. In January-September, total value of exports to EU countries increased by 1.1% and exports to countries outside the EU by 6.1%. In the same period, import value from EU countries increased by 0.5%, but decreased from countries outside the EU by 0.8%.
