Japan Provides over $300k for Installation of Water Supply System and Construction of Primary School Building

(Phnom Penh): The Government of Japan will provide USD 307,720 in total for two recipient organizations under the framework, the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (“KUSANONE”). The grant contracts were signed on 26 February 2026 between Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia, and the representatives of the two recipients respectively, to carry out the following projects. (1) The project for the installation of a water supply system at 9 villages in Kondieng Reay Commune, Svay Rieng Province. Recipient: Svay Rieng Water Utility (USD 134,969). In this project, a water supply system will be installed in Svay Teab District, Svay Rieng Province. Currently, most of the people living in this area have difficulty accessing to safe drinking water and are facing health risks due to the lack of a safe water supply facility within the commune. Through this project, more than 12,000 people will gain access to affordable, clean water and adequate sanitation in the next three years, which will contribute to the improvement in their living standards. (2) The project for the construction of Samdach Krom Preah Primary School Building in Stung Treng Province. Recipient: Stung Treng Provincial Department of Education, Youth and Sport (USD172,751). In this project, a six-room school building equipped with school furniture and a five-room toilet will be built at Samdach Krom Preah Primary School in Stung Treng City, Stung Treng Province. Currently, students at this school have difficulties in studying because the wooden school building and wooden furniture are in poor condition. And there is less hygienic environment due to the lack of enough number of toilets. This project aims to bring about a safer and more comfortable learning environment, and it is expected to benefit around 580 students and 20 teachers. Japan’s KUSANONE projects started in Cambodia in 1991 in order to support Cambodia’s reconstruction and development at the grassroots level. The assistance aims to protect those who are vulnerable due to various factors such as poverty and/or misfortunes that directly threaten their lives, livelihood, and dignity, as well as to promote the self-reliance of local communities. Since 1991, the Government of Japan has provided over USD 72 million for mainly local authorities and non-governmental organizations to implement over 700 KUSANONE projects throughout Cambodia. =FRESH NEWS
