US and Iran exchange strikes in the Gulf as Trump threatens Oman

US forces attacked military targets near the southern Iranian port of Bandar Abbas in “self-defence”, despite a ceasefire agreed in April. Iran said it launched retaliatory strikes against a United States air base in the Gulf as tensions heighten around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the base targeted had served as the source of the earlier US attack. Kuwaiti authorities later confirmed that air defence systems intercepted missiles and drones after warning sirens sounded across the country.
