Central African Republic - Sudan Situation (As of April 30, 2026)
Countries: Central African Republic, Sudan Source: UN High Commissioner for Refugees Please refer to the attached Infographic. Context The Central African Republic is hosting 36,414 Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Most of these refugees arrive through the Am Dafock border area, in Vakaga Prefecture. To ensure a coordinated and adequate response to this influx, the Government of the Central African Republic has established a settlement in Korsi, located in the town of Birao, approximately 60 kilometers from the Am Dafock border. This settlement currently hosts around 23,324 Sudanese refugees. In addition, having entered the country through various border crossings, approximately 13,090 Sudanese refugees have sought refuge in other parts of the country, often in hard to reach areas, particularly in the prefectures of Bamingui Bangoran, Haute Kotto, Haut Mbomou, Mbomou and Ouaka. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in close collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees (CNR), coordinates the response for Sudanese refugees. In line with its global mandate to provide international protection, UNHCR, in partnership with the CNR and various humanitarian actors (United Nations agencies, international and national NGOs), delivers life saving assistance and resilience building support to refugees. This response includes access to asylum, registration and documentation, protection of rights and physical safety, as well as the monitoring of risks related to violence, exploitation, discrimination or refoulement. It also comprises essential humanitarian assistance vital to the survival and dignity of refugees, including access to water, food, non food items (NFIs), emergency shelter, health services, livelihoods support and education. The implementation of these interventions is underpinned by a structured and coherent coordination framework. Through the Refugee Coordination Model (RCM), UNHCR brings together humanitarian partners, local authorities and refugee community representatives to ensure a harmonized, effective response in line with international standards.
