Cyclist who died in accident named locally

THE CYCLIST who lost his life in an accident in Limerick City this past Tuesday has been named locally as Brian Hodnett. Mr Hodnett died following a traffic incident in the city. From Castleconnell, Limerick, he is survived by his mother, Elizabeth and his brother Andrew.  Brian is being described as an “absolutely lovely man” a “gentle soul” and a talented writer. He will repose at Meehan’s Funeral Home, Castleconnell, Co. Limerick, on Friday (29th May) from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. His mass will take place in St Joseph’s Church, Castleconnell at 11.30am on Saturday, followed by burial afterwards at approximately 4 pm at the Abbey Cemetery, Bantry, Co. Cork. GARDAÍ are investigating the accident and have appealed to the public for anyone who may have witnessed or recorded the incident to come forward to help in their investigations. According to Gardaí, the fatal road tragic incident took place shortly after 2pm on Tuesday (May 26) on the Dublin Road in the Mountshannon area of Limerick City. Gardaí said the incident involved a bicycle, and a male cyclist, aged in his 40s, “left the scene and travelled to a domestic residence”. Gardaí said that, following the incident, “the male cyclist received treatment by emergency services” and was “pronouced deceased during the afternoon of Tuesday 26th May, 2026”. Now, Gardaí are appealing for anyone who might have witnesses the incident to come forward. They appealed especially for “road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) and were travelling on the Dublin Road, Mountshannon, Limerick City, between 1.30pm and 2.10pm on Tuesday 26th May 2026” to make the footage available to investigating Gardaí.
