Trump to make final decision on Iran deal

U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington will soon make a “final decision” on a possible agreement with Iran aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries, while Iranian officials stressed that no final deal has yet been reached. According to remarks reported by Al Jazeera, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said messages continue to be exchanged between Tehran and Washington, but negotiations have not produced a definitive agreement. At the same time, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said any agreement with the United States would be judged by actions rather than statements, arguing that practical implementation remains the key measure of success. The comments highlight continuing differences between the two sides despite ongoing diplomatic contacts. While both governments have acknowledged communication channels remain open, neither has announced a breakthrough on issues related to the conflict, sanctions relief, or Iran’s nuclear programme. The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that any future agreement must address concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities, regional security issues and freedom of navigation in strategic waterways. U.S. officials have also maintained that verification and enforcement mechanisms would be essential elements of any final deal. Iranian officials, meanwhile, have insisted that any settlement must include meaningful sanctions relief and guarantees that future U.S. administrations will not withdraw from an agreement, reflecting concerns that emerged after Washington exited the 2015 nuclear accord during Trump’s first term. Last week, Trump said negotiations were making progress and suggested that any future agreement would be “better” than the nuclear deal reached under former U.S. President Barack Obama. He argued that a new arrangement could provide a more durable framework for addressing disputes between Washington and Tehran. Diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent weeks following months of military confrontation, with regional mediators including Qatar and Pakistan seeking to facilitate communication between the two sides. However, major disagreements remain unresolved, and both governments have continued to signal caution about the prospects for a comprehensive agreement.
