The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that any future agreement must address concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities, regional security issues and freedom of navigation in strategic waterways. U.S. officials have also maintained that verification and enforcement mechanisms would be essential elements of any final deal. Iranian officials, meanwhile, have insisted that any settlement must include meaningful sanctions relief and guarantees that future U.S. administrations will not withdraw from an agreement, reflecting concerns that emerged after Washington exited the 2015 nuclear accord during Trump’s first term. Last week, Trump said negotiations were making progress and suggested that any future agreement would be “better” than the nuclear deal reached under former U.S. President Barack Obama.
