Iran’s Araghchi discusses Hormuz Strait with Omani counterpart

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi discussed developments surrounding Iran and the future management of the Strait of Hormuz during a telephone conversation, as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent a renewed escalation between Tehran and Washington. Writing on X on Friday, Araghchi described the conversation as “very productive” and said both sides stressed solidarity between Iran and Oman against potential threats. He said the ministers also discussed the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz within the framework of national sovereignty and international law. Araghchi added that Iran remains open to consultations and dialogue with neighbouring countries on regional security issues. His remarks come as negotiations between Tehran and the United States continue, but significant differences remain over the terms of a possible agreement. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that they judge negotiations by actions rather than statements, arguing that previous commitments and guarantees have failed to build trust. Senior Iranian leaders have maintained that any long-term arrangement must include practical measures that address Tehran’s security and economic concerns. The latest diplomatic contacts coincide with efforts by regional states to preserve a fragile ceasefire and prevent disruption to maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries roughly one-fifth of globally traded oil and gas supplies. Any instability in the waterway has the potential to affect international energy markets and global inflation. The discussions also come as U.S. President Donald Trump reviews what he has described as a final proposal related to a possible understanding with Iran. Trump recently said he would make a “final decision” after consultations with senior national security officials, while negotiations continue over extending the current ceasefire and addressing disputes surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme. Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Washington remains prepared to resume military strikes if diplomacy fails to produce a lasting agreement. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Hegseth said the United States possesses the capability and resources to restart military operations against Iran if required, while stressing that the administration continues to pursue a diplomatic solution. Regional mediation efforts have intensified in recent weeks. Qatar and Oman have played active roles in maintaining communication channels between Tehran and Washington, with both governments urging political and diplomatic solutions to avoid a broader conflict across the Middle East. Oman has long served as a discreet mediator between Iran and the United States and has facilitated several rounds of indirect talks during previous periods of tension.
