Prime Minister tours Chiquibul forest
By Zoila Palma: On May 29, 2026, Prime Minister John Briceno toured the Chiquibul.
The tour was guided by Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD).
The Chiquibul Forest is one of Belize’s largest and most important forest ecosystems, located in western Belize along the border with Guatemala and made up of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Chiquibul National Park, and the Caracol Archaeological Reserve.
The Chiquibul is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to rare wildlife such as jaguars, scarlet macaws, and Baird’s tapir.
“The integrity of the Chiquibul is not only a matter of sustainable forest management, natural resource protection, environmental stewardship, and climate resilience—it is also a matter of national security.
Today, I spent the day with the FCD team, reaffirming our shared commitment to the protection, sustainability, and long-term preservation of the Chiquibul,” the Prime Minister said.
FCD has maintained an active management and protection role in the Chiquibul Forest since 2007.
