Video footage retrieved and two active leads as police close in on Dr Bonilla’s killer

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police say they are actively pursuing two leads in the murder investigation of Dr. Naum Bonilla and have emphasized that neither line of inquiry suggests the physician was involved in any criminal or improper activity. Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith told our colleagues at 7News that Dr. Bonilla was driving along Ramirez Avenue yesterday morning when his vehicle was overtaken and blocked by another car. An armed man then exited the vehicle and opened fire, killing the doctor at the scene. Investigators have since recovered surveillance footage from the area, which they believe will be critical in identifying those responsible and advancing the investigation. When asked whether detectives were examining a possible connection between the murder and a civil lawsuit Dr. Bonilla had filed against a business associate, ASP Smith declined to comment on that specific aspect of the case. “It is an ongoing investigation, and we don’t want to speak too much in a way that may prejudice the investigation,” Smith said. Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in from across the country. The Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Belize Medical and Dental Association, and the Garden City Medical Center have all issued statements expressing condolences to Dr. Bonilla’s family, friends, and colleagues. No arrests have been made. Police are urging anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward immediately.
