Situation Update
On 26 June 2026, the Ministry of Health and Population of the Central African Republic officially declared a cholera outbreak in the health districts of Bimbo and Mbaïki, following laboratory confirmation by the Institut Pasteur in Bangui.
As of 1 July 2026, active cholera transmission has been confirmed in three health districts, including the capital city: Bangui 2, Bimbo, and Mbaïki. A cumulative total of 214 suspected cases and 24 community deaths have been reported, resulting in a high case fatality rate of 11.21 per cent. Children under the age of 10 are disproportionately affected, accounting for 44 per cent of all reported cases. Males represent the majority of cases, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.21, corresponding to 117 male cases and 97 female cases. The epidemiological profile highlights the significant vulnerability of children and underscores the severity of the ongoing outbreak.
The outbreak continues to spread along the Ubangi River, affecting multiple communities across the impacted districts and increasing the risk of further geographical expansion. Given the high mobility of populations and the river’s role as a major transport corridor, there is a significant risk of transmission to additional localities and vulnerable communities along the river basin.
