Grand Basra Water Project hits 86.5% completion, speeds up pipeline work

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The General Directorate of Water, operating under the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Public Municipalities, announced on Saturday, July 11, 2026, a significant acceleration in the pipeline deployment for the Grand Basra Water Project. According to an official corporate briefing, the execution rate for the transmission line has officially surpassed 86.5%. Engineering crews have successfully laid and secured approximately 26.5 kilometers of the heavy-duty pipeline out of the total planned 37-kilometer network, marking an important milestone in modernizing southern Iraq’s utility grid. Providing a detailed administrative update to the 964 Network, the Director General of the General Directorate of Water, Ammar Adel Hussein, explained that construction operations are currently being executed around the clock under a rigorous double-shift system (day and night). The current operational focus centers on the critical crossing zone near the Al-Askari bridge overpass. Hussein highlighted that technical teams have completed a major portion of the complex subterranean trenchless crossings, which are vital for integrating the remaining sections of the transmission corridor without disrupting existing urban road frameworks. Strategic Project Blueprint Project Scope: Grand Basra Water Project (Phase 1 Transmission Line) Design Capacity: 200,000 cubic meters per hour Total Length: 37 km (26.5 km completed) Current Completion Rate: 86.5% Target Beneficiary: Comprehensive coverage for the entire Basra city center The resident engineer for the infrastructure project, Mortada Mohammed, confirmed that heavy machinery and engineering units are utilizing advanced Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) to execute microtunneling procedures. Current field operations involve the systematic placement of reinforced concrete jacking pipes designed to withstand long-term pressure metrics. As a core pillar of the federal cabinet’s ministerial program, Phase 1 of the pipeline infrastructure serves as the primary distribution trunk that connects directly to the Hartha purification plant (Phases 3 and 4). Once fully commissioned, this multi-billion dollar strategic asset will permanently stabilize the regional municipal network, delivering clean, reliable water to the heart of Basra.
