9 Killed, 10 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Highway Crash in Western Mexico
At least nine people, including two children, were killed and 10 others injured after a truck collided with multiple vehicles on a highway in Mexico’s western state of Jalisco, civil protection authorities said on Sunday.
The crash occurred on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway, a major route linking the city of Guadalajara with the Pacific coast. Emergency crews launched a large-scale rescue operation after receiving reports of a collision involving a truck and several vehicles.
According to Jalisco civil protection authorities, nine people died at the scene, while 10 others were taken to nearby hospitals with injuries of varying severity.
Among the injured were two members of Mexico’s National Guard, who were transferred to Magdalena Hospital near Guadalajara because of the seriousness of their injuries, officials said.
Authorities also confirmed that four U.S. citizens sustained minor injuries in the crash. They were transported by a private ambulance service to Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara. Officials did not immediately release their identities.
Videos shared by local media showed several vehicles engulfed in flames, sending thick black smoke into the air as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Rescue teams spent several hours searching damaged vehicles, treating survivors and clearing debris from the highway.
Officials have not determined the cause of the crash. Investigators are examining whether factors such as excessive speed, mechanical failure, road conditions or driver error contributed to the collision.
Traffic on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway was temporarily disrupted while emergency responders secured the scene and forensic teams carried out their investigation.
Jalisco is one of Mexico’s busiest transportation hubs, and the Guadalajara-Tepic highway carries heavy volumes of commercial freight and passenger traffic. Accidents involving large trucks on Mexican highways have repeatedly raised concerns over road safety, vehicle inspections and emergency response capacity.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional information, including the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding the crash, will be released as it becomes available.
