Turkey Detains 20 Undocumented Afghans, Arrests Three Suspected Migrant Smugglers
Turkish authorities have detained 20 undocumented Afghan migrants and arrested three people suspected of migrant smuggling during an operation in the northwestern province of Bolu, officials said on Monday.
According to Turkish police, the operation targeted irregular migration and human smuggling networks operating in the province. After completing administrative procedures, the Afghan nationals were transferred to the Bolu Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, where deportation proceedings were initiated.
Authorities did not disclose the identities of the migrants or the three suspects, nor did they provide details on how the Afghans entered Turkey or the circumstances leading to the operation. The investigation into the suspected smuggling network remains ongoing.
The operation comes as Turkey continues to tighten enforcement against irregular migration through expanded identity checks, border controls and deportation efforts. Afghan nationals remain among the largest groups of undocumented migrants apprehended in the country.
According to Turkey’s Directorate General of Migration Management, authorities detained 19,574 Afghan migrants during the first half of the year, the highest number recorded among all nationalities during that period.
Turkey has long served as both a destination and a transit route for Afghans fleeing conflict, economic hardship and humanitarian challenges, with many seeking to continue onward to Europe.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the deportation of Afghan migrants, warning that many could face serious risks if returned to Afghanistan. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged governments to ensure that asylum seekers have access to fair protection procedures and that returns comply with international refugee law.
Turkish authorities say their migration policies are implemented in line with domestic legislation and international obligations, targeting irregular migration and migrant smuggling networks while distinguishing between individuals in need of international protection and those residing in the country without legal status.
The latest operation underscores Turkey’s continued efforts to curb irregular migration and dismantle smuggling networks amid growing domestic pressure to strengthen immigration enforcement.
