17 Afghan Citizens Killed in Tajikistan Border Drug Clashes
Tajikistan says 17 Afghan nationals accused of attempting to smuggle narcotics were killed in seven border clashes during the first half of 2026, as authorities reported rising drug trafficking activity and increased narcotics seizures along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
Tajikistan’s Drug Control Agency said 17 Afghan nationals accused of drug trafficking were killed in seven armed confrontations with border forces during the first six months of 2026, highlighting continuing security challenges along one of Central Asia’s main narcotics trafficking routes.
According to Tajikistan’s state-run Avesta news agency, citing the Drug Control Agency on Monday, July 13, authorities also arrested 18 Afghan nationals on suspicion of drug-related offenses during the same period.
The agency said border forces seized 1,513 kilograms (1.513 tonnes) of narcotics along the Afghan frontier, while an additional 601 kilograms were confiscated from the Afghan suspects arrested inside Tajikistan.
Nationwide, law enforcement agencies registered 592 drug trafficking cases during the first half of the year, an 11 percent increase compared with the same period in 2025. Authorities said security forces seized a total of 2.963 tonnes of illegal narcotics across the country.
Officials also reported the arrest of 28 foreign nationals on drug trafficking charges, including Afghans, as well as citizens of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The Drug Control Agency claimed that narcotics production and synthetic drug manufacturing continue inside Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s ban on poppy cultivation and repeated announcements that it has intensified anti-drug operations since returning to power in August 2021. The agency did not provide evidence to support its assessment.
The nearly 1,350-kilometre (840-mile) Afghanistan-Tajikistan border has long been regarded as one of the principal transit routes for Afghan-produced narcotics destined for Russia and European markets. The porous mountainous frontier has remained a persistent security concern despite years of strengthened border enforcement.
Earlier this year, Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security announced the seizure of 58 kilograms of narcotics allegedly trafficked from Afghanistan in the Shamsiddin Shohin border district, leading to the arrest of two Tajik citizens.
According to official figures, Tajik authorities confiscated 2,742 kilograms of narcotics originating from Afghanistan during 2025, a 50 percent increase over the previous year. While officials attribute the rise to intensified enforcement operations, analysts caution that higher seizure volumes do not necessarily indicate increased drug production or trafficking, but may also reflect improved interdiction efforts.
The Taliban has consistently maintained that it has significantly reduced opium cultivation and expanded counter-narcotics operations across Afghanistan. However, neighboring countries and international agencies continue to report substantial drug trafficking activity along regional smuggling routes, underscoring the gap between Taliban claims and ongoing security concerns across Afghanistan’s borders.
