FAI Cup action in Limerick
TREATY United host UCD in an attractive second round fixture in the FAI Senior Cup at the Markets Field on Friday, kick-off 7.45pm.
And in a novel contest, Limerick District League flagbearers Janesboro entertain five-time champions Sligo Rovers from the League of Ireland Premier Division in the same competition at Pearse Stadium on Saturday, 4.30 pm.
Founded in 1943, this is without question Janesboro’s most historic fixture.
Now 500/1 shots, ‘Boro defeated fancied St Michael’s of Tipperary 3-1 in the opening round.
Prolific goalscorer and former Junior International Shane Clarke is the team manager. Clarke, who has bagged in excess of 600 goals in junior football, experienced League of Ireland action with Limerick FC.
He has a talented squad at his disposal with the likes of the ever reliable Aaron O’Sullivan between the posts, the Kerry native having previously featured in goal for Kerry FC a couple of seasons back when the Kingdom outfit lost to Bohemians in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at Mounthawk Park in Tralee.
Many of the panel also spent time with Treaty and Kerry FC Under 20s in the past.
Rovers, who are captained by Limerick native Will Fitzgerald, have a proud tradition in the blue riband of senior football. At the outset of this week, long-serving manager John Russell departed for Shelbourne (to replace Joey O’Brien).
The side are 28/1 to win the Cup.
Match day tickets (€10 adults, €5 juveniles) can be purchased in advance online on Eventbrite or from the club pavilion any evening ahead of the game or on match day at the venue.
A smashing souvenir programme at a cost of €5 has also been produced for the fixture. Match day sponsors are Nature’s Hand, Crescent Shopping Centre.
